Best in the Show

Best in the show

On Friday June 22nd, 2018, I was delighted to be awarded Best in the Show in the first Listowel Arts Festival

This was a juried show with the theme The Wild Atlantic Way and produced a variety of responses in many different mediums. It also coincided with the 20th anniversary of The Olive Stack Gallery.

I would like to share what PJ Lynch, who judged this show, had to say about my work. I feel very honoured and privileged to have my work critiqued by such an outstanding artist.

Best in the show

“I was delighted to see humorous or witty pieces alongside the more atmospheric, and purely abstract work alongside the carefully observed. It is great to find some artists working in traditional media, like oils whilst others are experimenting in sculptural forms or using mosaic or enamel to express their unique visions.
It is clear to me that all of the artists submitting have engaged at a very deep and thoughtful level with their subject, and that each work of art in the exhibition evokes a tangible sense of that magical area where our land meets the ocean.
All of the work is of a very high standard but some pieces are outstanding, and from them I have chosen “Mullaghmore” as my choice for Best in Show.

I was impressed by its simple yet powerful composition, the shrewd choice of a muted but evocative colour palette and the artist’s evident mastery of their medium. The draughtsmanship draws the viewer in and leads the eye around the picture.
Limestone rocks, and a gray cloudy sky are expertly described, but for me, this work succeeds in purely abstract terms as much as it does as a descriptive piece.
The clear, clean and delicate blade of pale blue sea that bisects the almost brutal Burren landscape is magical, and enticing, and makes for a work of art of the highest order.

My congratulations to the winner and to all of the artists involved, and many thanks for asking me to judge your exhibition. It was a great pleasure and a privilege.
